		<description>

Born in Kobe and based between Tokyo and New York, Nami is a producer and creative project manager working at the intersection of digital innovation, public space, and community design. Currently part of the social design arm of Rhizomatiks, she leads large-scale civic and cultural projects that repurpose infrastructure, build collaborative frameworks, and foster inclusive public environments. Her work spans project scoping, international coordination, and creative consulting for public-sector initiatives, aligning designers, technologists, policymakers, and communities to reimagine healthier urban futures.Alongside her professional practice, Nami produces independent works as an artist exploring storytelling, sound, and collective imagination in contexts of asymmetrical power. Her projects consider how narratives circulate, challenge distortive visual and cultural frames, and open space for alternative articulations of self and place.&#38;nbsp;

With critical interests in the exchange of ideas, identity, and
 culture, she exercises a deep commitment to community and collective care through her work across global networks. Her work has been supported internationally, including by Fulbright, Projects for Peace, Sony Music, and the UK Research Institute.&#38;nbsp;

KK Expressway. Tokyo, Japan.&#38;nbsp;Client: Tokyo Kosoku Expressway Co., Ltd. / Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Urban Development (2023–)Originally constructed in the 1950s as a pioneering private-finance initiative that transformed Tokyo’s waterways into elevated roadways, the KK Expressway once symbolized postwar recovery and urban mobility. With its role as a highway now concluded, the project is reimagining this infrastructure as a pedestrian-focused cultural and public space encircling Ginza -- a project on the scale of New York’s High Line. As part of the creative team led by Panoramatiks, I am producing the revitalization effort by coordinating architects, designers, and civic stakeholders, and supporting the formation of a long-term “co-creation platform” to guide development through to the projected 2040 opening.

Tokyo, Japan. Role: Project / Production Management (Panoramatiks)
Collaborators: TRIAD, COZUCHI, COMMOSUS, invited jurors and interdisciplinary practitioners

Visional City Design Competition (VCDC) is an international design competition and call for proposals and startup-scale initiatives addressing the overlooked “shadows” of contemporary cities—such as underutilized land, aging buildings, complex ownership structures, and spaces left behind by large-scale redevelopment. Launched in 2025, the competition invites interdisciplinary approaches spanning architecture, urban and regional design, art, business models, and social or legal frameworks.

The first edition, themed “Exit of DYSTOPIA,” focuses on Tokyo’s six central wards and asks participants to identify a real site and urban challenge, then propose a concrete pathway forward—whether spatial, operational, or entrepreneurial. Rather than pursuing a singular utopian vision, VCDC positions the city as a testing ground for new urban models, pilot projects, and ventures that generate long-term public and economic value. Selected proposals will be exhibited as part of Tokyo Creative Salon 2026.

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Tokyo, Japan. Role: Project / Production Management (Panoramatiks)
Collaborators: National museums, research institutions, and design archives across Japan

Commissioned by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), DESIGN デザイン design is a nationwide initiative to transform Japan’s design heritage (spanning craft, industrial design, and folk art) into a living archive for the future. The project aims to preserve and revitalize design assets that have supported Japan’s culture and industry, turning them into open, accessible resources for future innovation and education. Rather than creating a single centralized archive, the project develops a network-based digital platform that connects existing collections from museums, research centers, and private archives across Japan. The project seeks to preserve and revitalize design assets that have long supported Japan’s cultural and industrial landscape, repositioning them as open resources for innovation, education, and industry development.
The initiative collects and digitizes both 3D data and contextual information of design artifacts—ranging from traditional crafts to modern industrial products—establishing a comprehensive database that bridges past and future design practice. The goal is to build Japan’s first unified, publicly accessible design archive that both preserves cultural heritage and stimulates future creative industries through open access, education, and research.

Asllan Rusi Sports Palace. Tirana, Albania. As a Producer at Panoramatiks, I contributed to an international design competition proposal for the revitalization of the historic Asllan Rusi Sports Palace in Tirana, developed in collaboration with Kengo Kuma &#38;amp; Associates, Buro Happold, and local partners. The proposal reimagined the landmark arena as a modular cultural venue capable of hosting immersive events, combining architectural transformation with media and experience design.

Our team developed concepts including an immersive dome experience, motion-reactive LED basketball court, façade lighting strategies, and urban-scale installations aimed at reconnecting the arena with the surrounding city. My role focused on coordinating between international teams, supporting creative and technical integration, and helping shape the proposal during the competition phase. The submission was awarded second place in the competition.

Motomachi Shopping Arcade (“Motoko”). Kobe, Japan.&#38;nbsp;Client: JR West Japan; Sponsors: Rakuten, Mercari, others (ongoing)

Motomachi, Kobe’s historic shopping arcade, has long been a hub for vintage culture, reuse, and circularity -- values that have been shaped by the city’s complex history as an international port. Building on this legacy, the project aims to reactivate the arcade as a contemporary cultural and commercial platform that bridges heritage with future-oriented sustainability. At Panoramatiks, I am producing the initiative by coordinating a multidisciplinary platform of architects, designers, urban planners, and product developers, while facilitating community engagement, policy alignment, and corporate partnerships. The project advances both regional revitalization and new cultural economies rooted in reuse and cross-cultural exchange.

Jerry Moss Plaza. Los Angeles, CACreated by PANDAKERO under the creative direction of EyeJack's founder and renowned digital artist Sutu, "Bloomscapes" is an AR sculpture showcasing a flock of abstract sound creatures which take over the skies while emanating a serene soundscape throughout the plaza. Visitors to The Music Center can also engage with the AR sculpture by amplifying their interaction on the Jerry Moss Plaza large screens.
Music off the Wall: An EyeJack Experience was a gallery bringing musical experiences to life from a flat image on the wall. Each piece offers a unique combination of animation, musical genre, tone and potential affinities or intentional discord. The combination of works provokes questions like: Is this the next innovation of the music video? Is this the next way we connect to micro-music forms, like those abundant in social media, as computing technology goes spatial? This was an exhibition of The Music Center’s Digital Innovation Initiative with EyeJack in-residence.&#38;nbsp;

Leimert Park. Los Angeles, CAI faciliated workshops for Anansi Revolutionary Collective’s Conflux, in which participants in Los Angeles and Nairobi co-created music via teleperformance. The Los Angeles satellite took place as an exhibit in TEC Leimert’s Black to the Future Conference 2023. A radical remote/hybrid collaboration process, confluxes at their core emphasize process over product. It uses a variety of virtual tools for artists to teach each other new skills in real time, including but not limited to:

Gather.Town: a web-conferencing platform that allows a number of people to operate together or split into smaller rooms.
Various DAWs: BandLab, Ableton, Studio One, Pro Tools, or any other major DAW. This provides the highest quality audio and control from the source, and gives a lot of room for experimentation and programming.
Sonobus as a low-latency media transfer, that sends audio and MIDI over a private network. This is what allows multiple spaces to work togeher simultaneously at low-latency, which is vital for Confluxes that spread across various time-zones.
ZeroTier as a private network tool to connect all devices directly, and further lower latency that would be encountered over normal networking. This also gives us the freedom to have whatever network configuration we desire.
Figma as an interactive design tool to map the Conflux plan and interactions. While any design tool works, we prefer to use Figma as part of our design process.

Episodes feature conversations and interviews with the provacateur and with attendees of the Black Bar Social, delving into the provocative questions on the future of culture posed during the evenings. Themes include: the future of labor and technology in relation to historically marginalized communities, Afrofuturist visions for the future of society, the relationship between ancestors and their progeny, AI and social logics of hospitality, and the role of ancestral intelligence and diasporic worldmaking in emerging technologies. The podcast extends the impact of the program beyond the physical space of the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion and fosters broader dialogue about the future of cultural and technological innovation.
Nami leads the production of the podcast, designing and executing interviews, authoring the script, composing the soundtrack (and other ambient sound design capturing the live essence of the event), and spearheading the audio editing of the 60-minute episodes. &#38;nbsp;

azine is an Asian/American art collective in New York that centers queer and women-identifying artists. As co-founder and head of curriculum, Nami developed and led biweekly arts workshops designed to spark dialogue around identity and community care. The collective also organized teach-ins in partnership with the Center for the Study of Ethnicity &#38;amp; Race (CSER) at Columbia University, advocating for the departmentalization of the center and the hiring of more tenure-track faculty of color. In collaboration with the Consortium for Critical Interdisciplinary Studies (CCIS) at Barnard College, azine successfully pushed for the establishment of an Asian American Studies track. The zines featured above capture the cumulative work of these workshops, documenting both creative outputs and moments of collective reflection.

&#38;nbsp;Musical Performance &#38;amp; Embodied Inflections of Agency
in the Allied Occupation of Japan 1945-53&#38;nbsp;Academic thesis advised by Dr. Kevin Fellezs, Dr. Aaron Fox, and Dr. Gillian Gualtieri.
A sociological and ethnomusicological study examining musical performance and consumption as sites for enacting and negotiating agency in Japanese people's reimagining of their gendered and ethno-national identities under U.S. Occupation. Using lenses of social performativity, embodiment, colonial mimicry/hybridity, deviance, and historical materialism, I analyze seven in-depth interviews I conducted with Japanese cultural producers who facilitated musical performances on and surrounding U.S. military camps between 1945-53, finding that music imported from and inspired by the United States held a double-edged symbolism as a vector of both liberation from prewar and wartime repression and incurred alignment with a new, globalized patriarchy. &#38;nbsp;RSC IF Fellowship: Learnings&#38;nbsp;
As the first performing arts Independent Research Organisation (IRO), RSC-lead research brings together artists, researchers, and cultural and creative practitioners to explore practice-based inquiry centred on creative innovation and social impact. As IF Fellows and collaborators’ research develops over the fellowship year, they will detail their learnings and outcomes here.
Some current areas of RSC-led research with our fellows, artists, and partners explore areas such as the social impact of practice-based pedagogy in schools, emerging immersive technologies, motion and performance capture, game engine development, and virtual production.
A further AHRC grant to upgrade facilities for creative and cultural research (CResCa) will also allow access to state-of-the-art equipment as the RSC underscores its creative research capability. An expanded in-house scope includes new immersive technologies to explore virtual embodiment via motion capture, photogrammetry, and volumetric capture, and Lidar scanning to create 3D models, harnessing emerging technologies for storytelling.

Abstract: As social fragmentation and civic disengagement intensify, public spaces remain essential infrastructures for community, dialogue, and trust. This paper explores installation informatics—a critical approach that integrates creative and technological interventions within public space to redistribute visibility, agency, and belonging. Drawing from theories of social infrastructure, spatial justice, and participatory design, the paper investigates how site-specific installations can function as civic technologies. It presents original fieldwork from Black Bar Social, a recurring public program and installation series prototyped by the author in Los Angeles. Using a mixed-methods evaluation of 208 participant surveys and observational data, the study measures impact across five sociological dimensions of belonging: dignity, agency, care, responsibility, and power. Comparative case studies from Copenhagen and London contextualize broader applications of participatory civic tech. The findings argue that Installation Informatics offers not only a model for reimagining urban space but a method for rebuilding social trust through reciprocal, community-centered engagement.

Born in Kobe and based between Tokyo and New York, Nami is a producer and project manager, researcher, and writer working at the intersection of culture, technology, and public space.

Her work as an artist considers relationships between the fluid circulation of stories, social imagination, and survival in contexts of asymmetrical power.
 Currently leading projects within the social design arm of Rhizomatiks, she manages large-scale initiatives that repurpose urban infrastructure, foster civic engagement, and support global artists. Her work brings together architects, technologists, policymakers, and communities to develop inclusive, sustainable models (both hard and soft) for urban and cultural revitalization.

Nami’s background spans ethnographic research, transmedia storytelling, and international collaboration across Japan, the U.S., and Europe. Her projects have been supported by institutions including Fulbright, Projects for Peace, Sony Music, and the UK Research Institute. As an RSC Interdisciplinary Fellow,&#38;nbsp; she explores how storytelling and co-creative design can articulate alternative narratives of place, identity, and collective survival.email me at nrweatherby@icloud.com to collaborate or for my full CV!
